Dragão is a neighbourhood bar and restaurant on Rua Morna, close to the municipal market area. It sits outside the most obvious tourist circuit, and you notice it immediately: local customers, Cape Verdean staff, and a daily rhythm that doesn’t revolve around visitors, but around normal life in the area.
The food is homemade, straightforward, and well executed. Daily specials, fresh fish, grilled meat, cachupa, simple pizzas, burgers, wraps… Nothing pretends to be fancy, but most of it delivers —and plenty of it stands out— for flavour, portions, and price.
The vibe is relaxed: sometimes lively, sometimes calm. If Benfica is playing, the TV takes over. If the power goes out, a candle appears and nobody panics. It’s that kind of place.
They don’t sell you “authenticity” here.

How to get there without pointless detours
It’s on Rua Morna, an area Google Maps sometimes marks with more enthusiasm than accuracy. Still, it’s an easy walk from central Santa Maria in about 10–15 minutes, especially if you’re coming from the municipal market zone.
It’s not hidden, but it’s not on the front line either. If you see locals coming and going, you’re in the right place. Parking is usually easy and free —not always a given in Santa Maria.
What to eat (and why people keep coming back)
The strong point is consistency. No fireworks, but no nasty surprises either.
The fish of the day, the chef’s tuna, prawns, cachupa, and grilled grouper show up again and again as reliable choices. Portions are generous and prices are surprisingly low: proper plates around 400 CVE (about €4) aren’t unusual.
There are also simple, well-made pizzas, budget burgers that do their job, and quick wraps when you don’t want to overthink it. Traditional desserts pop up now and then too, like Romeo and Juliet (cheese with papaya).
Vegetarian options? Limited, though a vegetarian pizza is often available. It’s not the focus, and it’s worth knowing beforehand.
Practical tips that actually matter
Come normally hungry, not in a rush.
Don’t expect silence: life happens in here.
Service is friendly, close, and unpretentious —sometimes quicker than the “better organised” places in town.
Wi-Fi exists, but it’s not why you’re here.
Wheelchair access is limited (like in many spots on the island).
And yes, the prices are real: no tourist trap maths.

Lunch is great for fresh grilled fish without complications.
Later in the day, around 6 pm, it livens up: neighbours, cold beer, football, and overlapping conversations.
