Monte Leste is a wild, unmarked hike near Palmeira. Volcanic terrain, a demanding ascent and 360° views over Sal. Recommended only with experience, proper footwear and self-reliance. No easy routes, no assistance — just real mountain in the desert.
The mountain that appears before you reach it
Monte Leste makes itself known long before you ever set foot on it. Driving through the desert toward Palmeira or the Blue Eye, there it is: large, dry, solitary, rising out of nowhere. No signs, no promises. It simply waits for you to decide whether it stays scenery… or becomes the plan.
An untamed hike
This is not a prepared viewpoint or a marked trail. Monte Leste is an excursion for people who know what they’re getting into. There are no official paths, no guides, no ropes, no arrows. Just volcanic ground, loose sandstone and a mountain that doesn’t adapt to visitors.
It works for those who enjoy finding their own line and accepting that here, nothing is guaranteed. For anyone looking for comfort, it’s not the place.
Climbing, choosing your route and earning the view
The most common ascent is via the eastern face, from the Blue Eye (Buracona) area. The climb usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on pace and stops.
The terrain is steep, slippery in sections and without a clear route. At the top, the reward is undeniable: 360° panoramic views across the entire island of Sal, with Santa Maria visible on clear days. Absolute silence.
PACE, DIFFICULTY AND REAL CABO VERDE
This is not a tourist trail. There is no marked path, and the descent can be trickier than the ascent. Loose material and awkward sections require attention with every step.
Monte Leste isn’t hard because of technique. It’s demanding because no one guides you.
WHEN IT DOESN’T WORK
If you lack basic hiking or mountain experience, improvising here isn’t wise. With casual footwear, even less so. And if you expect an organised excursion, this definitely isn’t it.
Strong wind or intense sun only make it more unforgiving.
Said the local way
Wear proper hiking or trail shoes, carry enough water and keep a clear head. Ascend and descend via the same face unless you know the terrain well. A 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended. This isn’t a quick stop — plan it properly.
A mountain that doesn’t need visitors
Monte Leste doesn’t try to please everyone. It’s raw, dry and honest. If you climb it, it’s because you chose to. And when you come back down, there’s no café or applause — just dust on your boots and the feeling of having gone somewhere most people don’t bother reaching.
There are no viewpoints here. Only decisions.
